That Thing About You

My Review -

That Thing About You is a debut book written by Mayank Chandna (pen name Abhaidev). The cover page gives an idea about a romantic story, but it is more about soul searching where characters are merely pawns.

The main character of the story is Subodh, who works in an IT company in Mumbai. He is an introvert and considered immature by his colleagues. Ishaan is Subodh's colleague, plus a flatmate. He is known for sharing Subodh's secret at the workplace. A few side characters like Anu always annoy Subodh. Sneha, his love interest and a good friend.

The plot revolves around Subodh's desire and his indisciplined lifestyle. Things were changed when Sneha unknowingly hurt his feelings, which makes Subodh more isolated. One day on an office trip, Subodh bought a mysterious key. Soon he starts hearing a girl's voice in his head, which leads him to think that he is suffering from schizophrenia.

He called the voice named Kalpana. He doesn't understand why it is happening to him but soon establishes a connection with her. With time, she brought some life-changing adjustments to Subodh's life. First, Kalpana helps him understand the difference between what to share and whatnot, but when Subodh tries to get rid of Kalpana, it bizarrely changes his life.

The story is a self-discovery of Subodh's life, which starts with some celestial bodies talking to each other about whether they should interfere in the earthly matter or not. What happened to Subodh? Does he find out the mystery behind the voice? If it is all in his head, why does he listen to a woman's voice, not a man's? How one's curiosity changes the fate of two people? To know the answers, you need to read the book.

Abhaidev successfully creates suspense in the story, which hooks the reader to the end. The language is easily understandable, and the narration is smooth. The typical Indian parents and their wish to see their son married are mentioned very well. Unfortunately, the story revolves around Subodh, so the other characters don't get much space. Overall, the story is gripping and recommendable. It's a perfect blend of destiny and coincidences.
