My Review -

Horror is the only genre that I never pick, but this year I decided to explore a new genre, and then this book comes my way right away. I'm one of those people who believe in ghosts and spirits and feared too. I avoid watching fright movies also, but this time I was determined to read a horror book, and I'm proud that I finish reading it.

Embers of Pyre is my fourth read from the author, and like his previous book, Misogynist Interrupted, this one is again compact and fast-paced work. The story is about a freelance photographer Mandakini and her experiences with a restless soul named Prabha. Mandakini lives alone in a big city; she's single and prosperous, but the feeling of loneliness is entering into her life slowly and steadily. She only has her maid Rukmini whom she confides in.

Everything is going well in her life; she starts experiencing strange things in her house until one day. First, she thought she's hallucinating, but with time, she realizes that it is something else and seeks the guidance of a Tantric. Being a modern and well-educated woman, she delves into the age-old traditions and understands that humans have untouched multiple mortal life aspects.

Her encounters with Prabha leads her to a new city. There she finds some life-altering truths about the people around her that made the story intriguing. Shyam Sundar Bulusu recounts the tale by a single POV and portrays a strong and independent female character. The end seems a little gossamer; the starting chapter indeed hooks the reader. It gives me a chilly feeling while reading Mandakini's conflicts with the spirit.

The story depicts social issues like domestic violence and despoliation towards women. The language is easily understandable, and the story progress rapidly. It was a good one-time read and recommended to those looking for some horror books at a beginner level.
