Heart of Deception

Book Review -

Heart of Deception is the first book in the Consequences series written by J.A. Duxbury. This fiction tale revolves around a thief and the royal family of Albermarle.

Prince Hector laid a trap to find a thief who could do his dirty business, and Marek Janosik fell into it; knowing that it would be a lure, his curiosity got the worst out of him. From there starts the series of consequences for Marek, or I can say a downfall. But before that, he became a close member of the royal family.

The prince and Marek came to an understanding and mutually benefited each other with the help of another associate of the royal's entourage, Fitz. He's the one who did all the research on Marek and bends him to follow the rules, not to mention teaching him all the manners. Life was satisfactory in the palace, but a few threats lurking in the shadows exhilarated the story.

Marek was tasked to find the secrets hidden by the prince's enemies, but he created a bigger mess for himself. He did save princess Euphenia from time to time, but that's all. The rest of the story is about Marek's journey to Europe and the unfolding of the mysteries and lies woven around prince Hector; how he will fit in the whole scenario is the main query.

The story is fast-paced, with a lot of detailing and action sequences. You'll find a rebel teenager, a thief, exemplary companions, royals, and lots of enemies who are after monarchical artifacts.

J.A. Duxbury builds a solid foundation for the second book in the series, especially by leaving the readers on a cliffhanger. However, I enjoy reading it and can't wait to learn more about Marek and Tamara's journey. I recommend it.
