Kindling: Prequel to the Rage of the Immortals by Kanika

Book Review -

Kanika's fourth book, Kindling, is a prequel to her debut book, Rage of the Immortals, and my first read by her. This fantasy revolves around two brothers, their love for the same woman, and how it altered their association.

Cifer and his younger brother Atom are emotions, but they have a human form, and so do their parents, Dave and Davie, along with their other children. These immortal beings performed specific duties and did not allow to meddle in Earthly matters by Dave, but circumstances forced them to do the opposite.

Cifer's primary is rage, while Atom is still figuring out. They both have a thing for The Lady of the Wild, Ivprith, whose primary is love. Cifer and Iv decided to spend their life together, and Atom held his peace for his brother's happiness.

Another main character is Nightmare, a cat who can transform into a human shape and Atom's protector. As the story progresses, so does their relationship. Finally, the story's villain is someone who was created by a powerful eternal, and he badly wants to kill the rest of the immortals.

With the death of other beings, Atom's figuring out his primary, and the secrets disguised by Dave, Cifer, and Ivprith, the story reaches its finale. Will the web of lies shatter loving relationships? How long can the immortals hold grudges? Will they be able to restore peace?

The story is fast-paced, which I always enjoy. But there are a few things that could have been better, like the narration style and having a glossary related to the characters and who they are. I also found many loopholes and confusing terms; if Kanika had portrayed them well, this book would have made my favorite list.

I loved reading about Atom and Nightmare, and how their connection grew was captivating. It was one of the best parts of this story for me. But Atom lives in his mind, and his love for Iv causes more pain than pleasure, especially for Nightmare. I would love to know what happened to her in the Rage of the Immortals. She has so much potential, more than any other character.

Overall, this book is about mystical creatures portrayed as emotions dealing with the same issues of jealousy, craving, and passion as we humans do, but had to battle for the survival of others also. If you're into supernatural mythic stories, this will be an entertaining read for you. However, I recommend it to newbies.
