Precision: The Magruder Mysteries by D.C. Scott

Book Review -

Precision is a debut book written by D.C. Scott and the first book in the Magruder Mysteries series. This mystery book starts when a first-grade retired sleuth Jay Magruder decides to go through cold case files and finds one that piques his interest, as he knows one of the victims.

In order to investigate the case, he decides to put up an ad, and that's how he meets the narrator of the story. A young man who knows everything about the victims contacted the detective and began with his story. A tale about a male protagonist in this book - John Riley Logan, an architect, co-owner of the restaurant, musician/songwriter, and a charitable person.

The narrator starts with how John was newly divorced and met Helen with the help of his best friend, Lenny. She is a prison doctor, also divorced, with a kid named Mitchell. Helen and John both struck a chord when they first met, and it was not a standard date we read in a book. But, with Helen's help, John learned about a life-threatening disease, so she was her savior.

John loves children and wants them badly, so whenever he falls in love and does very quickly, he starts to make plans about the future, but most of the time, his dreams are shattered. The same happened when he realized that he and Helen had different opinions. John's ex-wife Janice wanted kids but could not conceive and left John; before that, he was engaged to Tina.

After Helen, John was heartbroken and had some flings; he started going to the church's single department and was introduced to a woman by Sallie. That woman became a prominent part of John's life, and together they fostered many kids and adopted some too. Everything was going great until, one day, he found out about the fateful event that changed his life.

But as they say, life goes on, and his past and present clash when John decides to move on. The story has many characters with various motives and importance, but the question of the hour is who killed John and his partner and what will they gain? Was it for money, revenge, or something else?

It has a gripping plot, straight language, and brief narration, but it sometimes creates chaos as one must remember numerous details and people. It would be nice if the author provided a list of characters with some information about them; I hope to see this in the rest four books of the series.

Apart from that, the book is mind-boggling. So often, I thought I knew who the killer was or killed along with John, but I was proved WRONG, which rarely happened. So, Kudos to the D.C. Scott, and this makes me very excited to read the second book, where the narrator and the detective will go on to catch the killers and save the life of someone close to the taleteller.

If you love reading about relentless characters who will go to any length to get what they want, or character-driven murder mysteries that hook you from start to end, pick this book immediately. I recommend it.
