The Secret of Leifeng Pagoda by Ruby Gupta

Book Review -

The Secret of Leifeng Pagoda has become one of my favorite books this year. It is a part of Professor Shantanu Bose's series, which I had no idea about. There were two books published in the series, and this one is the third, but the good thing is that one can read this book as a standalone.

Ruby Gupta's ninth novel is inspired by actual events and is adapted by Motion Pictures. The protagonist is Shantanu Bose, a nano-expert professor and part-time detective who was asked to look into the death of his best friend, James Massey. The police shut the case as hit and run, but James's wife knows it was a murder, and that's why Shantanu started looking into the matter.

He soon realized that James was not the only one who had died in mysterious circumstances. Many prominent Indian scientists, researchers, defence personnel, and politicians were passed inexplicably, and their cases were closed due to a lack of evidence or considered suicide by the police.

While investigating, Shantanu realizes that he knows so little about his country's past and how it affects the present and the future. The well-planned slayings are leading India backward in terms of technological development, and it needs to stop.

Shantanu came across many theories but could not connect the dots. Finally, his hunch led him to China, and he found some new things to add to his file, but his life was in danger, including those who helped him. Playing a game of hide and seek with death, he finally connected the dots and uncovered the most sinister plan.

But what was the plan? Who killed the scientists and Shantanu's best friend? Who helped him in China? What conspiracy theories are part of this book? How much of the book is inspired by actual events, and how much is fiction? If you want to know the answers, pick up this book now.

This is my first time reading a book by Ruby Gupta, and I am absolutely impressed. Her detailed descriptions, character build-ups, plot twists, and narration are impeccable.

In Indian mystery/thriller novels, the author often puts a beautiful sidekick female character who says yes to everything or is portrayed as a love interest, which I always find irritating. But I am so glad that the author of this book didn't do such a thing and won my heart ultimately.

I would love to read the earlier two books in the series and am eagerly waiting for the next one, hoping that the author continues with the story of Wang Yong and the younger brother of Chen Shu. This engaging book is perfect for mystery lovers, and I can't wait to watch the movie/series. I highly recommend it.
