The Settled Homeless is a debut book by Rover V (penname). The story is told through the lens of Dr. Theodar Rae, an intellectual, focusing on themes of growing up and confronting social and personal difficulties.
He lost his family early and moved from one country to another for studies, research, and employment. Being focused on his work, he has no social life and no close friends, but he shares firm bonds with his mentors. But everyone needs that one person with whom they can spend the rest of their lives, and Nelly is that person to Ted.
But, bound by professionalism, they kept each other at arm's length; they both had no idea they would love each other immensely one day. So, they went on to their separate way until their paths crossed again. Nelly has traumatic experiences, and these two characters have unique ways of dealing with things, making the tale more dynamic.
This slow-paced, character-driven story portrays many human emotions, especially isolation and feelings of attachment and belonging to a place or person. In addition, this narrative discusses the difference between home and house. I also admire the role of teachers in Ted's life; they are praise-worthy.
It was nice to read how Nelly and Ted came together slowly and steadily and did not ignore their professional commitments, which generally happen in romance stories. If you are into contemporary/literary fiction and looking for an account with impeccable diction and a unique outlook on life, then pick this one now. I recommend it.
