Chimaera by Navin Reuben Dawson

Book Review -

COVID-19 is one of the pandemics we will all remember for the rest of our lives. Unfortunately, I have bad memories of this disease, as I suffered from it twice. I am dealing with its long-term effects, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and anxiety.

My life has completely changed, and I don't know who to blame. Because, as humans, that's what we do, we find someone to accuse, but in this case, we need to know who is responsible for all the shit millions of people have gone through. Who is liable for all the deaths?

Of course, being a COVID patient, I researched about it a lot and its effects. I watched the news, like everyone else, but reading about a heist and understanding its scientific theories grabbed my attention. So, when this book came my way, I thought, why not read it?

However, Chimaera is a fiction book, but Navin Reuben Dawson has appealingly woven a story that seems non-fiction because one can find numerous similarities that they have already read or heard about this infection. The plot revolves around an Indian spy Jake Stevens who has a twenty-four-hour tight window to uncover the mystery symbol received by the head of the WHO.

As per the orders of Jake's boss, he landed in China in disguise and began his expedition. He met Juan Liu in a museum while looking for a lead, and soon they both were chased by police, the mafia, and the Chinese government. They don't know who to trust, so following their gut feeling and relying on each other, they uncover a key to creating an antidote.

But for the Chinese government, it is a race to create the vaccine foremost and then dominate the world by selling it. It is a race against time, where the protagonists have hidden agendas, but they both want what is best for humanity. So, until Jake and Juan came into the picture, things were looking pretty impressive for the Chinese Major General Chao Xing.

The story is fast-paced, and the research related to the origin of SARS-CoV-2, Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is considered the epicenter of the epidemic, the theories about virus creation in the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and how it spread in the whole world is the crux of this book. Will Jake and Juan achieve what is unattainable, especially on Chinese soil?

I enjoy reading this book, and it has the potential to turn into a series, or if Navin Reuben Dawson wants, then he can continue his other mystery books revolving around Jake Stevens. As a reader, I would love to know what he is doing right now or his next assignment with a few details of his past life.

Overall, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, and in my case, it compelled me to check the latest updates related to COVID. It is also best to read if you're facing a slump. So, if you're convinced enough, pick up this book now, and be ready to go on an adventurous ride with Jake Stevens.
