The Brown Sunshine by Arvind Rishi

Book Review -

Arvind Rishi's debut book, The Brown Sunshine, is a thought-provoking psychological thriller that delves deep into the psyche of its protagonist, Anthony Biswas. Set against the backdrop of India, this novel takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, traversing the delicate balance between reality and the landscape of dreams.

Anthony Biswas, a forensic pathologist haunted by a traumatic accident from his school days, lives a life characterized by isolation and pain in Bangalore. He is caught in the relentless grip of his memories and persistent alcohol addiction, making him a complex character throughout the story.

The story's heart lies in the aftermath of the accident that bound Biswas and his four friends - Helix, Mayank, Abhimanyu, and Arora - together. The happening in Darjeeling on a school picnic changed the lives of these characters. As they grapple with suffering in their unique ways, Biswas remains trapped in a cycle of stagnation. He must discover what happened on that day years ago to move forward.

The narrative turns surreal as the boundaries between reality and dreams blur. Arvind Rishi skillfully weaves a mysterious atmosphere that intrigues the story, keeping readers engaged as they strive to uncover the truth. The existential questions that emerge add depth to the plot, prompting readers to contemplate the nature of memory, choice, and the essence of existence itself.

However, the book's climax and resolution might leave some readers wanting more. While the journey through Biswas' inner turmoil is captivating, the final moments lack the impactful punch that the narrative buildup promises. Though satisfying in some aspects, the resolution resonates less strongly than one might hope, given the depth of emotions invested in the story.

The book deserves praise for its vivid portrayal of sentiments, exploration of complex psychological themes, and immersive narrative style. As readers close the book, they might find themselves echoing the protagonist's desire to continue his story.

With the potential of a sequel or further exploration, Arvind Rishi could elevate this book into a lasting masterpiece that lingers in readers' minds long after the final page. I enjoy reading this fast-paced suspense thriller and urge you to read it, too.
