Interview with Akshay Gupta

He is a self-published author who writes poetry and fiction with equal ease and charm. Akshay ke Alfaaz was his debutant work, and The winning Smash is his first English novel.

Q.1 Tell us something about yourself not many people know?
A.
At 20, I went through the most depressing phase of my life, I suffered from bipolar disorder, and despite the unfavorable circumstances life threw at me, I decided to keep fighting and not lose my courage. I came out stronger, giving a befitting reply to my illness.

Now, I am on a mission to deliver a message to the world through my literary works that if I can get success in my life even after facing a significant amount of time going through opposites and unfavorable conditions, then anyone can surely be successful in his life.

Q.2 Are we going to read more from you shortly? Any new project you’re working on?
A.
Yes, I am working on a new project named Karna- The Pride of India.

Q.3 What inspired you to write The Winning Smash?
A.
This story is very close to my heart because it is inspired by someone's real life, he has seen a lot of struggles since his childhood, but he has not lost his courage. Through his story, I want to message youth that if, after a lot of struggles, Dhruv, the protagonist of my story, can achieve his dream. Why can’t they?

Q.4 What is the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
A.
The most difficult part is to express the opposite sex’s emotion. As a man, I know how men think, but to feel like a woman and express their emotions was a difficult part.

Q.5 How do you develop your plots and characters? Do you use any set formula?
A.
Yes, I have a set formula. First, I outline my story, then my protagonist's character profile, and then I start writing a story.

Q.6 Do you believe in writer’s block? If yes, how do you deal with it?
A.
Yes, I believe in it. To remove writer's block, my mentor Sweta Samota helped me a lot. She said, “Just find your why? Why this story is important to you and sticks to it. Don't think about the result just enjoy your writing journey."

Q.7 What was the hardest part of writing this book?
A.
The climax scene of the book where the protagonist knows who is playing the game with him. I wanted to make it more dramatic, which took 5 days' time. I was stuck there.

Q.8 Imagine a future where you no longer write. What would you do?
A.
I would like to teach yoga. I am a yoga lover. Meditation and yoga are my first love; I can’t imagine my life without them.

Q.9 Among all the supporting characters from your book, who is dearest to you, and why?
A.
Geeta, The main vamp of this story, is my favorite character. She made this story very interesting. Her greed and ambition produce challenges in front of Dhruv; without her character, I don’t think this story can be that interesting.

Q.10 Is it vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing? Tell us about your marketing campaign?
A.
Yes, It is very important to get exposure and target the right readers. Since my book is about teenagers, so I use Insta for my book marketing. I create reels, and I do virtual book launches. I created my own website on which I give lots of freebee to my readers.

Q.11 Do you have any quirky or unique writing habits?
A.
Yes, I love to write in the morning after my yoga session. I feel more creative after yoga.

Q.12 What’s the best part of being an author?
A.
The best part of being an author is to express and explore yourself. You add some value to your readers' life which gives me true satisfaction. I felt I had given something which would remain forever in this temporary world. Even after my death, I will be helping people through my books.

Q.13 If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
A.
Just express yourself don't think too much about the result.

Q.14 How did you select the title of this book?
A.
Since my book is about badminton, I want to keep it short and more effective than I have gone through other books of the same genre, then I finalized The Winning Smash.

Q.15 Who designed your book cover? How do you select him/her?
A.
I designed my book cover.

Q.16 How do you select the name of your characters?
A.
As I tell you, my book is inspired by the real story, so I used the characters' names with a little modification.

Q.17 Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with good or bad ones?
A.
Yes, I love to read book reviews. Good reviews inspired me to continue my work with more passion, and through bad reviews, I learned from them.

Q.18 Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?
A.
There are two people whom I love to meet. The first one is M.S. Dhoni I love his thought process, and how he analyses every moment of his life, this is truly inspirational for me.

And the second one is Sandeep Maheshwari. He is himself an institution. He is a living example of how to live life in this competitive world. In a world where everyone talks about me and myself, he is the one who is giving a new perspective on life to everyone.

Q.19 What is your favorite book from other authors and why?
A.
Well, there is a very long list of my favorite books. The first one is Think and Win Like Dhoni by Sfurti Sahare. Which shares only 5 principles of Dhoni's life which made him such a great thinker.

The second one is The Rudest Book Ever, written by Shwetabh Gangwar, which is a collection of different perspectives on life.

And the third one is Aapko Apne Jeevan Mein Kya Karna Hai? by J. Krishnamurti it is a true spiritual book that shares the actual meaning of spirituality.

Q.20 Share the experience of your journey so far?
A.
Well, in my author journey, I found that I became more sensitive, and spiritual, and I became more creative.
