Q.1 Please introduce yourself - Where are you from? How long have you been blogging? What’s the name of your blog? What made you decide to start a book blog?
A. Hi, I’m Autumn! I’m from The United States, but Georgia more specifically. The name of my blog is Autumn Book Reads. I’ve been blogging for about a year and a half, but I had been involved in the community a bit before that. I started by writing reviews of the books I was reading on Goodreads. I got a few comments from people and we started talking and then they told me about their blogs. I had never heard of such a thing for books and I immediately knew I wanted to have one too! It was a kind of history after that.
Q.2 What is your favorite genre and book?
A. I love all different kinds of genres, but probably urban fantasy/paranormal romance best. Fantasy will always be one of my favorites, but there is just something so magical about the possibility of there being hundreds of supernatural creatures in OUR world that we just don’t know about yet! I find myself coming back to this genre again and again because of that.
My favorite book would have to be A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas. That book just gets to me every time and no book has come close to capturing my heart that much.
Q.3 What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when you first started book blogging?
A. I wish someone would have told me that it’s okay to take a break. A few people on my blog know this, but my mom passed away earlier last year. It was completely sudden and out of nowhere. I took a small break from blogging but eventually felt so guilty that I just jumped right back in. I didn’t have as much motivation as before and my posts suffered as a result. You could clearly tell a difference in content. I knew I should just take a break but I didn’t want to let people down. I finally decided after months of struggling that I just needed to stop. And when I finally came back when I was ready, things were so much better! I just wish someone would have been there to tell me that in the beginning.
Q.4 What piece of advice you would like to give to other bloggers?
A. My advice is to do what’s best for you. If you need a break, take it. If you want to make a post that you aren’t sure will do well, do it. Make the content you want to make and post however much you want. Don’t follow a specific set like that you have to post 2-3 times a week because other people do. The purpose of most bookish blogs is to have fun and share our love of reading. Do that and don’t worry about anything else.
Q.5 How many books are actually on your bookshelf/shelves right now?
A. God, this is such a loaded question. I’m a complete book hoarder and collector! I have up to nine copies of certain books lol. After some counting, the final total is 387 for this question.
Q.6 If you could be a character from a book for just one day who would you be and why?
A. Probably Feyre from ACOTAR. Like she has so much! She has Rhysand for a mate, the Inner Circle to be her friend, has kickass powers, and gets to live in my favorite universe of all time.
Q.7 Is blogging your profession or just a hobby? Does your family support you? What’s their take on this?
A. This is a complicated question because it’s a bit of both. I am not currently working anywhere else as I am pursuing my English degree in college. But I really do want to make a career out of reading and my blog has a lot to do with that. I’ve made connections and gotten to do things I never thought I would. It has certainly opened doors for me in the field I want to work in. My family is supportive, but I sometimes feel like they think it’s just a hobby and I’m taking it too far. I don’t think they completely realize that I don’t want to work in anything else but books.
Q.8 What do you think is the best strategy for getting more visitors to a blog?
A. My answer to this question will always be to blog hop! Check out other people, like their posts, leave comments. People notice when you put in an effort like that and it causes them to check your stuff outback! In the beginning months of my blog, talking to people through their blogs and Twitter was definitely what I would tribute to any success that I have.
Q.9 What are the top 3 characteristics you look for in a good book?
A. I know a lot of people might not agree with me here, but a five-star book for me isn’t one that I find philosophically challenging or one that will open my mind. The way to get me to rate a book highly is for the book to open my heart. One of my golden rules while reading is that, if it doesn’t make me cry, it probably wasn’t for me. So, the three things I must have are probably characters that grip my heart, a romance that inspires me to not settle for anything less than phenomenal, and a world that I just want to jump in and live in forever.
Q.10 What are your favorite Instagram/Bookstagram/Booktuber accounts?
A. I love Piera Forde on Booktube, @thewhitethorns, and @darkfairietales_ on Bookstagram. And shoutout to @brythalar. She’s a smaller account, but her SJM content is amazing!
