Interview with a Book Blogger | Sukhaja | The Bookish Bulletin

Sukhaja The Bookish Bulletin

Sukhaja

Q.1 Please introduce yourself - Where are you from? How long have you been blogging? What’s the name of your blog? What made you decide to start a book blog?
A. I’m Sukhaja (yes, it’s a unique name) that’s pronounced Suk-Aja. I’m from Bangalore. Been living here most of my life except one year when I went abroad for my masters. I studied English Literature. It’s my first love.

My blog is called The Bookish Bulletin, and the reason I got on bookstagram was that I wanted to keep track of what’s happening in the book world. Once my master's program ended, I experienced a bookish hangover of sorts. So, I decided that becoming a bookstagrammer would help me dedicate more time and effort to reading and meeting readers like myself so we can discuss, and critique the books we love together.

Q.2 What is your favorite genre and book?
A. Historical fiction, literary fiction, and memoir are my favorite genres (hard to pick one, sorry). My current favourite book (keeps changing every other year) is The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

Q.3 What one piece of advice do you wish you’d had when you first started book blogging?
A. The aim is to interact with people and form solid connections by having meaningful conversations. If you’re not adding value and bringing in insights from your reading, are you even being true to yourself as a reader?

Q.4 What piece of advice you would like to give to other bloggers?
A. Don’t focus on followers and free books. Book blog to establish connections (even virtual ones). The following will follow from there.

Q.5 How many books are on your bookshelf/shelves right now?
A. Maybe 450-500? It’s increased in numbers since I first started my blog. Had to buy a new bookshelf halfway through my year of blogging…haha.

Q.6 If you could be a character from a book for just one day who would you be and why?
A. I would love to live a day as Juliet Ashton. The main character from The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society. She’s an aspiring writer and goes in search of a story because she receives a letter from one of her readers one day.

Q.7 Is blogging your profession or just a hobby? Does your family support you? What’s their take on this?
A. It’s a hobby, and I’ve managed to incorporate it into my lifestyle now that I’ve been doing it for the last three years.

Q.8 What do you think is the best strategy for getting more visitors to a blog?
A. Using the right hangtags and rotating hashtag groups for each post.

Q.9 What are the top 3 characteristics you look for in a good book?
A. Memorable characters, a fast-paced plot, and beautiful writing that makes you stop to appreciate, and re-read a sentence.

Q.10 What are your favorite Instagram/Bookstagram/Booktuber accounts?
A. @between.bookends, @thebooksatchel, and @sumaiyya.books.
