While in college, he worked with behavioral and mental health adults. He returned back home to the Norristown area and continued to work with behavioral and mental health children. He has been working in this field for over eighteen years. He later had a son named Breyln, along with his sister Brooklynn. After years of work and life experience, he developed a book entitled Captain B.
Q.1 Tell us something about yourself not many people know?
A. Something about myself that not many people know is that I like country music and love watches.
Q.2 When should we expect your next book? What will it be about?
A. The next book should be out around August or September. It will be a continuation of the Captain B series.
Q.3 What made you write Captain B?
A. What made me write Captain B is that I have many cousins and friends with children, not to mention that I have been working in the behavioral and mental health field, so I came in contact with many children that go through bullying and me experiencing it myself when I was young.
Q.4 What actually goes on when the author and illustrator meet?
A. I actually never met my illustrator in person but shared my vision for how the characters are supposed to look. It took three revisions, but we finally got it right.
Q.5 What do you love most about writing stories for children?
A. What I love most about writing books for children is the reaction that I get after they read or the book it read to them.
Q.6 Why do you think it is important for children to develop a love of reading?
A. It is important for children to develop a love for reading because reading can open up a whole new world that the children would never think of or come into contact with. It helps them expand their imagination and become active thinkers.
Q.7 What’s your writing schedule while you’re working?
A. Honestly, my writing schedule is extremely sporadic. Whenever I get inspired or have an idea, I stop whatever I’m doing and write it down.
Q.8 Many writers describe themselves as “character” or “plot” writers. Which are you? What do you find to be the hardest part of writing?
A. If I had to choose, I would relate more so to character writing because everything I write about is coming from a first-person perspective. I either witnessed it, or it's been told to me. All my writing comes from real-life occurrences and or events.
Q.9 Which children’s book most inspired you as a child?
A. There wasn't a children's book that inspired me to write. My writing just came from me witnessing so much and wanting to be a part of the change that happens.
Q.10 How do you select the name of your characters?
A. The main character Captain B comes from me. What he represents is not me. Captain B represents that subconscious feeling that you get when you are about to make a decision out of impulse or a feeling. Captain B is that feeling that helps you make the correct decision. The other characters are names that I just came up with and fit within the story.
Q.11 Do you have any advice for aspiring children’s book authors?
A. My advice for aspiring authors is to write. Write whatever you are feeling, thinking, want to say, or have an opinion on, write it down and write about it. You have a voice and something to say. Let it be heard!
Q.12 Do you believe in writer’s block? If yes, how do you deal with it?
A. Yes, I do believe in writer's block. What I do for writer's block is stop writing and do something else totally different. Like go for a drive, play a sport, cook, watch tv, talk to family and or friends or take a nap.
Q.13 Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with good or bad ones?
A. Yes, I do read my book reviews. I understand that people are people, and everyone is not going to like or agree with everything that you do or write about.
Q.14 Do you have any unique and quirky writing habits?
A. No, I do not have any quirky or unique writing habits. I just write what I feel.
Q.15 Outside of your family members, name one entity that supported your commitment to become a published author?
A. Outside myself, my family, and my publishing company, Mascot Books, there was no one else that supported me becoming a published author.
Q.16 How will you describe your life before and after getting published?
A. My life before becoming published hasn't changed that dramatically. Just more people know and are reading my work.
Q.17 What three things should readers expect from your books?
A. Three things that readers should expect from my books are honesty, relatability, and comprehension.
Q.18 Which famous person, living or dead, would you like to meet and why?
A. Barack Obama would be a person that I would love to have a conversation with. Besides being the first black president and what all came and comes with that, but how he handles being a husband, a father, and still be himself. What drives him every day, and has his viewpoint changed on Americans and himself.
Q.19 What is your favorite book (apart from children's ones) and why?
A. Honestly, I do not have a favorite book.
Q.20 Share the experience of your journey so far?
A. My experience of my writing journey has been an exciting one. I always knew I liked to write. English was actually one of my favorite subjects in school, but I never put pen to paper in this manner to write a collective book. I honestly feel as though I should have started to write and create my book series earlier in life, but on the other hand, I probably wouldn't have as much experience to write about. As I always say, everything happens for a reason.
