Interview with Ignacio J. Esteban


He is a recently retired ATF Special Agent with 26 years of federal law enforcement within the United States Department of Justice. He is now a writer and published author on Amazon with over 40 books from fiction to non-fiction, including his autobiography ATF Undercover detailing his dangerous undercover cases with repeat violent offenders, gang members, international firearms traffickers, and armed drug dealers, and so much more.

Q.1 Tell us something about yourself not many people know?
A.
I played the #1 position at my University on the men’s tennis team, which later inspired me to write my first novel titled, Winning Wimbledon: Against All Odds. A great read about an American overcoming many obstacles and hurdles to become the first qualifier to win The Championships, Wimbledon in London, England. Growing up, I always dreamed of playing and winning Wimbledon. I lived my dream through this novel.

Q.2 What inspired you to write ATF Undercover?
A.
I started writing an early draft in March 2020 at the beginning of the Covid crisis after being challenged by our acting Director in ATF to do something different that would keep our minds occupied during this crisis.

Q.3 Are we going to read more from you in the near future? Any new project you’re working on?
A.
Yes, I have written over 40 books from fiction to non-fiction, including travel picture books in that I photographed myself in fabulous scenic locations in the United States. I just finished a short book titled, Full Throttle: Riding with the Hells AngelsThe Life of Sonny Barger. An exciting read about Hells Angels icon Sonny Barger who led an international crime syndicate in California, the face of the Outlaw Bikers.

Q.4 How long does it take you to write this memoir?
A.
I started in March 2020 but did not publish until February 2022 since there were so many details about my life and cases that I wanted to get right. I also did not work on the book for months at a time due to career obligations.

Q.5 If you could tell your younger self anything, what would it be?
A.
You are making all the right choices keep up the hard work, and all your goals and dreams will come true.

Q.6 How did you deal with the book's emotional/sensitive impact (on yourself) while writing it?
A.
It provided cathartic relief to write about my life, including my father’s passing due to pancreatic cancer, which was an extremely difficult time for my family and me.

Q.7 How many books have you written? Which one is your favorite?
A.
I have written 42 books so far, and my autobiography ATF Undercover is my favorite detailing so many exciting aspects of my life.

Q.8 Is it vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing? Tell us about your marketing campaign?
A.
Absolutely, targeting the right readers can only help your books grow in popularity. I’m an independent writer that self-published all my books on Amazon, relying on social media platforms to market my books. Kindle/Amazon has also helped by ranking my books in specific genres that I have written in via book sales.

Q.9 Do you believe in writer’s block? If yes, how do you deal with it?
A.
I have been fortunate I have had clear thoughts on all my books and what direction I wanted to write about.

Q.10 Did you face any kind of backlash/threats because of your books?
A.
No, I have received much support for the topics I have written about.

Q.11 What are the three things a reader can expect from your books?
A.
Well researched, exciting topics, and fair analysis.

Q.12 How do you select the name of your books?
A.
Normally by the subject matter I am writing about.

Q.13 What was one of the most surprising things you learned while writing your memoir?
A.
My recollection of details was pretty accurate when I compared the written reports I had.

Q.14 What is your favorite book from other authors and why?
A.
I like the Tom Clancy novels detailing fictitious events based on real-world occurrences.

Q.15 How do your family/friends feel about your book or writing venture?
A.
My family and friends have been highly supportive and have encouraged me to continue my writing.

Q.16 What kind of impact would you like to make with your books?
A.
I would like to have people from around the world read and enjoy my books.

Q.17 Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with good or bad ones?
A.
I read the good ones and the bad ones I try not to take them personally.

Q.18 Who designed your book cover? How did you select them?
A.
I do my own book covers based on the subject matter I am writing about.

Q.19 What was your most brutal scene to write?
A.
The toughest was writing about the tragic passing of my father from pancreatic cancer and its impact on my family.

Q.20 Share the experience of your writing journey so far?
A.
It was been a remarkable journey over the last eight months, and I would encourage all writers to continue with their aspirations and never give up.
