Interview with Shabaz Qazi

Q.1 Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
A. I would not like anyone to know anything more about myself.

Q.2 How do you come up with the titles to your book?
A. Through suggestions from friends, mainly from closed ones.

Q.3 Do you hide any secrets in your book that only a few people will find?
A. Yes, often.

Q.4 What advice do you have for writers?
A. To write something new and not to serve the readers with the same stories.

Q.5 If you could invite one person to dinner, who would it be and what would you cook?
A. Of course, YOU Aakanksha (somewhere I have to take your name), for being kind to me, and gracing my book with your genuine review. I can cook only Maggie.

Q.6 If you could tell your younger writing self-anything, what would it be?
A. A Fairytale.

Q.7 Is your book If We Ever Meet Again: I Shall Take Her Back To The Start inspired by a certain event/person/memory, etc.?
A. To an extent, it is based on certain events experienced by me and inspired by some wonderful people that I was fortunate to meet at a very young age. Otherwise, the whole story is fiction. More importantly, I have been saying all the readers that it is a romantic story and not a love story.

Q.8 What is the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
A. Nothing actually in my opinion.

Q.9 How do you select the names of your characters?
A. Generally, when I write the manuscript a random name is given to all the characters as I have a habit of changing names eventually. It is not certain. Most of the time names are given to a particular character based on his/her personality and later improvise it if I come across with some character from movie/ in real life.

For example, if a character is a girl who is carefree and enthusiastic, I would name her Chanchal and later while finalizing the draft of a manuscript I would improvise her name as Geet, like that of Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Meet, which would be apt for the novel, isn’t it?

Q.10 Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
A. I read everything written about my book. So far nothing bad is written yet. Even if someone did I would try to fill in the grey areas suggested by the critiques.

Q.11 In your opinion, what’s the recipe for an irresistible love story?
 A. Pain and salvation.

Q.12 How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?
A. Well, that’s a difficult question. It takes time for me to get over from the hangover when I am in the process of writing. It’s just like dealing with a break-up.

Q.13 What is the future for the characters? Will there be a sequel? Any new project you’re working on?
A. Yes, there is a sequel. Currently, I have titled it as Losing Her Twice. I may publish it next year, 2020.

Q.14 Do you have any unique and quirky writing habits?
A. Whenever I write a chapter, the very next day I catch hold my close friends and make them read. So that I can get there feedback, and try to improvise the write-up.

Q.15 What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
A. Nothing yet.

Q.16 What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?
A. Publishing anything rubbish. There isn’t a filter.

Q.17 Who edited your book and how did you select him/her?
A. My first novel was edited by two persons i.e., Mr. Ravie Gunjal and Ms. Mandira Patil (both being lawyers).
Both of them are close to me, and they being well acquainted with novel writing and having command over the language. I thought of going ahead with them for the editing process.

Q.18 Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
A. I would want to meet Diya Mirza. She is my crush since childhood. Though I have sent her a copy of my novel, recently, but I haven’t received any message from the other side. I guess I must not expect either to receive one.

Q.19 What is your favorite book and why?
A. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma. It’s self-help actually. It was gifted to me by my father, and the book has a great impact on my way of living.

Q.20 Share the experience of your journey so far?
A. Happy so far, that’s it.
