Interview with T.Sathish

Q.1 Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
A. I live in Chennai in a joint family with my wife, son, father, my in-laws, and nephew. I work in Cognizant technology solutions leading global practice. I am an avid reader and a big sports fan. Outside of my work, you will see me with a book in hand, or watching a cricket match, or a combination of such.

Q.2 Are we going to read more from you shortly? Any new project you’re working on?
A. Yes, I am working on a novel about the trials of a physically challenged stock trader.

Q.3 What did you do with your first advance?
A. I did not get an advance. But my first-month royalty made me cry, it was so small.

Q.4 What advice do you have for writers?
A. Keep writing and never feel shy to express yourselves. If what you write makes sense to you, it will make sense to a section of people somewhere. So be confident of your judgment. However, take feedback from constructive folks to improve.

Q.5 Do you Google yourself?
A. Yes, of late quite often.

Q.6 If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
A. I would have told my younger self to have written more and more.

Q.7 What are the most important magazines or websites for writers to subscribe to?
A. I think reading the works of the masters is the learning ground for writers. I don’t know about websites and magazines. However, writings of greats like RK Narayan, PG Wodehouse, and Agatha Christie should be the learning ground for writers.

Q.8 What is the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?
A. Not having lived in their shoes or interacted deeply to understand every emotion of the opposite sex is a big challenge.

Q.9 Does writing energize you or exhaust you?
A. Writing is something I enjoy thoroughly. No way will it ever exhaust me. As long as I am writing for the fun of it and not under pressure, it will never exhaust me.

Q.10 Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
A. I read every review of mine. A good review is a confirmation of my faith in the book. However, a bad one is a learning opportunity. If the bad review is for a badly produced book, like many typos or grammar issues, then it will be one to be ashamed of. It is not acceptable.

Q.11 Does your family supports your career as a writer?
A. Yes, they have been very encouraging.

Q.12 What do your fans mean to you?
A. It is great to have fans. They are the source of encouragement.

Q.13 Do you believe in writer’s block?
A. No.

Q.14 Do you have any unique and quirky writing habits?
A. I write my first draft with pen and paper, then move everything to electronic format for further review and refinement.

Q.15 What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
A. The fact that I have been able to write is a big accomplishment for me. Getting fantastic reviews on my debut novel makes me want to write more and explore my ability further.

Q.16 What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?
A. I am not very experienced in this profession to give this insight. I will get back on this question sometime in the future. However, I think that producing a badly edited book is a big unethical practice many smaller publishers practice.

Q.17 Who edited your book and how did you select him/her?
A. Namita from Keemiya creatives edited the book. I got her contacts on the internet via a blog.

Q.18 Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
A. RK Narayan and PG Wodehouse.

Q.19 What is your favorite book and why?
A. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. It is mind-boggling that a 19-year-old can write a book that deals with the emotional conflict between a monster and its creator. To me, this book will remain the best ever read by me.

Q.20 Share the experience of your journey so far?
A. Writing and publishing my debut novel has been a personally enriching experience. The journey to publishing had many downs with rejections from publishers. Some of them were given in the last round. But, it has toughened me for the future that lies ahead
